Spotters are essential when learning new skills. Some things to remember when spotting a stunt are to stay close, alert, ready, and prepared to respond to an emergency. Use a hands on approach during the learning process of a new stunt. Always stand close to the stunt, positioning yourself so that you can clearly see the head and neck area of the top person (flyer). Never walk away from a stunt until after the dismount is complete. Maintain your visual contact with the top person at all times. Stay quiet and mentally focused on the stunt being performed. It is also important to be able to shift your position in order to counteract the movement of the top person. Keep an eye on the hips and watch where they shift. Stand with your feet apart and hands up, always focusing on protecting the head, neck, and shoulder area. Always be prepared to break the fall of the flyer by wrapping around the waist, shoulders, or scooping under the arms. Never try to force the stunt to stay up and always remember to protect the head and neck.
